As part of the Churnet Valley Railway “Open House” weekend, you will be able to meet a number of our friendly volunteers from a variety of departments. One such team will be our Civils gang, who oversee the maintenance of our structures across the railway. Whether its one of our large and historic station buildings, or a far simpler boundary fence, they all require upkeep in one form or another.

They tend to focus on one larger project at a time, and having recently completed the repaint of our Victorian era signal boxes they have now moved on to the repair of Consall Platform 2. This attractive cantilevered platform has survived for more than a century, and was fully restored in 2004 enabling 2-train operation to return to the Churnet Valley for the first time since 1965. However since COVID the platform has been out of use, and significant repair work is needed to the wooden framework to bring it back into service – a task that is well within the capabilities of our Civils team given they completed the original restoration. Why not come and see just what is involved, and where you can play a part too?

Our civils team will be at Consall Station to explain their work, and showcase their recent achievements over the weekend of 25 and 26 March. If you want further information about volunteering then details are available on our website
