Kitchen Coach (RK 80030) Returns To Service Following Extensive Restoration Work

11/05/2026 (5 days ago)   General News

Following months of intensive work behind the scenes, Churnet Valley Railway is delighted to announce that RK 80030, our unique Kitchen Coach, was successfully returned to service in time for the start of the 2026 season.

RK 80030 is an especially significant vehicle within the heritage railway world, believed to be the only surviving original full kitchen coach of its type in the country still retaining its original purpose and layout. Preserving and restoring such a rare vehicle is therefore of huge importance, not only for Churnet Valley Railway but also for the wider preservation movement.

Over recent months, our dedicated Carriage & Wagon volunteers and staff have undertaken an enormous amount of work throughout the coach to both preserve and improve the vehicle ahead of another busy dining season. Much of the work has taken place quietly behind the scenes, involving countless evenings, weekends and long days in the workshop.

Externally, the RK has undergone a substantial cosmetic transformation. Extensive preparation work has included sanding back old paintwork, carrying out repairs, repainting and detailed varnishing throughout. Fresh signwriting and lining have now been reapplied, restoring the vehicle’s classic appearance, while the fitting of replacement glazing, refurbished doors, new door jambs and trims has helped complete the coach externally.

Beneath the vehicle, the work has been equally extensive. The coach bogies have been stripped, rebuilt and repainted, receiving replacement springs, new brake blocks and further mechanical attention throughout. Brake systems and associated components have also been overhauled and tested to ensure the coach is fit for reliable service throughout the season ahead.

Internally, volunteers have worked hard to completely refresh the appearance of the coach. Timber pelmets, trims and window surrounds have been removed, stripped back and revarnished, while repainting throughout the vehicle has dramatically brightened the interior. The work forms part of a wider refresh programme across the dining set, inspired by the classic Pullman styling of the famous *Topaz* coach at the National Railway Museum, helping provide passengers with a warm and welcoming heritage dining experience.

As the project neared completion, the final weeks became especially busy. Volunteers worked through difficult winter conditions to complete mechanical rebuilds underneath the coach, apply final varnish coats and carry out extensive testing runs between Cheddleton, Consall and Froghall. Faults identified during testing were quickly rectified by the team before the coach was finally passed fit for service ready to welcome its first dining passengers of the year.

Alongside the RK work itself, volunteers have also continued progressing wider refurbishment work across the dining train fleet, with ongoing restoration work to coaches including Diana and Nicholas helping maintain the consistently high standards expected from Churnet Valley Railway’s dining experiences.

The successful return of RK 80030 is a testament to the incredible commitment of our volunteers and staff. From painting and varnishing to engineering, woodworking, cleaning and mechanical repairs, every contribution has helped preserve an important piece of railway heritage for future generations to enjoy.

Everyone involved with the project would like to extend sincere thanks to all those who have supported the restoration work over recent months. Seeing the coach return to service and once again form part of the dining train has made the effort worthwhile.

If you would like to become involved with projects such as this, Churnet Valley Railway is always looking for new volunteers, regardless of previous experience. Whether your interests lie in restoration, engineering, painting, customer service or simply being part of a friendly and passionate team, there is always a role available within the railway.
