*  In 2025, the UK is marking the 200th anniversary of the modern railway with a national celebration called Railway 200. It commemorates the opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1825—the world’s first public railway to use steam locomotives. This landmark moment transformed transport, industry, and society, connecting people and places like never before. Today, railways remain vital to the UK, supporting the economy, cutting emissions, and easing congestion. Railway 200 will feature events, exhibitions, and activities across the country to honour this legacy and inspire future generations. It’s a moment to reflect on two centuries of progress—and to look ahead at what rail can do next.
