A Unique British Night Out — On a Steam Train in Staffordshire

There are fish and chip suppers, and then there's this. Every Wednesday evening from July through September, Churnet Valley Railway invites you to board one of the Midlands' most scenic heritage railways for a truly unique experience: a freshly cooked takeaway, enjoyed from the comfort of a moving steam train as it winds through the heart of the Staffordshire countryside.

Pre-order your fish and chips online, collect your hot takeaway from the van at Froghall Station, then step aboard for a return journey to Ipstones. There's no dress code, no set menu — just golden battered fish, proper chips, and mile after mile of beautiful valley scenery rolling past the window.

Whether you're looking for a relaxed family evening, a different kind of midweek treat, or a memorable night out near the Peak District, the Fish & Chip Train delivers something a little bit special — with a steam whistle thrown in for good measure.

Note: We aim to run steam-hauled services wherever possible. On occasion, diesel traction may be used — but the Churnet Valley views and the fish and chips are always the same quality.

What's Included in Your Fish & Chip Steam Train Experience

  • Your pre-ordered fish and chips (or sausage and chips / just chips)
  • A return steam train journey from Froghall to Ipstones through the Churnet Valley
  • Refreshment trolley service on board
  • Free parking at Froghall Station
  • Stunning summer evening scenery through one of the Midlands' most beautiful heritage railway routes

Please note: This is a takeaway food experience, not a formal dining train service. Food is collected at the station and enjoyed on board.

Where does the Fish & Chip Train depart from?
All journeys depart from Froghall Station, ST10 2HA. Free parking is available for all customers.
Is the train steam-hauled?
We aim to run all Fish & Chip Train services with steam traction wherever possible. Occasionally, diesel locomotives may be used — but the scenery and your supper will be every bit as good.
